How to Search by Image on Google

This wikiHow teaches you how to search for an image based on an existing image on Google. You can use the Google image search feature on desktop to upload your own image for which to search, or you can use the Google Chrome browser on both mobile and desktop to search for matches of online images.

Method One of Three:
Using Google Search on Desktop

    Open the Google Images page. Go to https://images.google.com/.

    Click . It's the camera icon on the right side of the search bar that's in the middle of the page.
    • If you want to find images that match a certain word or phrase, just type that word or phrase into the search bar and press Enter to view image results.

    Select a photo upload option. Click one of the following tabs:
    • Paste image URL - Click this tab if you copied the image's web address earlier. To copy an image's web address, open the image, click the address bar at the top of the window to select it, and press either Ctrl+C (Windows) or Command+C (Mac).
    • Upload an image - Click this tab if the image that you want to use is stored on your computer.

    Upload your photo. Depending on the photo upload option you selected, this step will vary:
    • Paste image URL - Click the search bar, press Ctrl+V (Windows) or Command+V, and click Search by image.
    • Upload an image - Click Choose File, locate and click the image you want to use, and click Open.

    Review the search results. If your photo exists elsewhere on the Internet, you will see different sizes and versions of the photo here; if not, Google will find images that look similar to the one you uploaded.

Method Two of Three:
Using Google Chrome on Mobile

    Open Google Chrome. Tap the red, yellow, blue, and green Chrome app icon.

    Tap the search bar. It's at the top of the screen.
    • If you don't see a search bar, first tap + in the upper-left corner of the screen.

    Enter a search term. Type in the word or phrase for which you want to find an image, then tap Go (iPhone) or Enter or (Android).

    Tap the IMAGES tab. It's near the top of the screen, just below the search bar. This will display all image results for your search query.

    Select an image to use. Tap an image that you want to use as the basis for your search. The image will open.

    Tap below the image. Doing so prompts a pop-up menu.
    • Don't tap the in the top-right corner of the screen.

    Tap Search by image. It's in the drop-down menu.[1]

    Review the results. You should see a list of matching (or similar) images displayed on this page.

Using Google Chrome on Desktop

    Open Google Chrome. It's a red, yellow, blue, and green sphere.

    Click the address bar. This is at the top of the Chrome window. Doing so will highlight the address bar's contents.

    Enter a search term. Type in a word or phrase for which you want to find an image, then press Enter.

    Click the Images tab. You'll see this just below the search bar near the top of the page. Doing so will display all image results for your search.
    • If you don't see Images, click More on the far-right side of the row of tabs, then click Images in the drop-down menu that appears.

    Select an image to use. Click on an image that you want to use as the basis for your search. The image will open.

    Click Search by image. This link is directly below the image's title in the right-hand grey box.

    • You cannot upload an image directly to Google Images. Images from Google are found randomly over the web, and the images usually have a link where the original image is found in.

  • What happens to the image that you upload? Does it remain available for anyone on the Internet to see?

    • It does not go anywhere else on the internet. Google uses the image you upload to find similar ones and wont use the image for any other purposes.
