How to Make a Mailing List in Gmail

This wikiHow teaches you how to create a list of Gmail contacts that you can email all at once. You cannot create a mailing list from within the Gmail mobile app, nor can you select your mailing list as a recipient in the Gmail mobile app.

Part One of Two:
Creating the List

  1. 1
Open Gmail. Go to in your web browser. If you're already logged into Gmail, doing so opens your inbox.
    • If you aren't logged into Gmail, click SIGN IN in the top-right corner of the page and enter your email address and password.
  2. 2
Click Gmail . It's in the top-left side of the page, just above the COMPOSE button. A drop-down menu will appear.
  3. 3
Click Contacts. This is in the drop-down menu. Doing so will open your Gmail contacts page in a new tab.
    • If the Contacts page opens in the same tab that you were already in, you're using the old version of Google Contacts and you'll need to switch to the new version in the next step.
  4. 4
Make sure that you're using the new Contacts page. If you see an option entitled Try Contacts preview on the left side of the inbox page, click that option to open the Google Contacts page.
  5. 5
Select contacts. Hover your mouse over a contact's profile picture (or their first initial if they don't have a picture), then click the checkbox that appears below your cursor and repeat this process for each contact you want to add.
  6. 6
  7. 7
Click Create label. You'll see this option at the bottom of the drop-down menu. Doing so prompts a pop-up window.
  8. 8
Enter a name. Type in the name that you want to use for your mailing list. This is the name that you'll type into the "To" field when addressing an email later.
  9. 9
Click OK. It's in the bottom-right corner of the pop-up window. Doing so will save your list of contacts as a label.

Part Two of Two:
Emailing Your Group

  1. 1
Re-open your Gmail inbox. Go to and sign back into your account if necessary.
    • This must be the same Gmail inbox for which you created the mailing list.
  2. 2
Click COMPOSE. It's on the left side of the Gmail inbox. Doing so opens a "New Message" window.
  3. 3
Enter your label's name. In the "To" field at the top of the "New Message" window, type in the name of the group. You should see the group's name and a preview of a few of its contacts appear below the "To" field.
  4. 4
Select the group. Click the group name below the "To" field to make it your email's recipient.
  5. 5
Enter a subject and your message. Do so in the "Subject" text field and the blank text field below it, respectively.
  6. 6
Click Send. It's a blue button in the bottom-left corner of the "New Message" window. This will send your email to each of the people in your group.

  • How do I hide the email addresses of an email group when sending group emails?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • When you send the email, put your name under "to" and put the full group name in BCC instead of "to".
    Thanks! 69 16
  • I have 36 addresses in the label folder. How do I send an email to all of them?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • Compose a new message and type the name of the folder into the "to" field. The 36 addresses should appear.
    Thanks! 17 2
  • How do I send out an email to my email list without the recipients knowing who else it was sent to?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • Send it to yourself as the primary recipient, then add your email list members' addresses under BCC (stands for blind carbon copy). This sends a copy to you as well as to your recipients.
    Thanks! 90 32
  • Why don't I have a new group option?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • The new version of Google Contacts works with Labels instead of Groups. Just add a label instead of a new group, then continue with the same steps as explained.
    Thanks! 15 4
  • How can I hide email addresses from recipients on my mailing list?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • Put their email addresses in the Bcc (blind carbon copy) section of the address section of the email. No one else will be able to see their email addresses.
    Thanks! 40 31
  • How do I remove a contact from a group?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • Go into a conversation with the contact you desire to remove from the group, or the person's G+ profile. Hover over the profile picture/name, and a drop-down menu of the group(s) the person is in should come up. Un-select the box of the group from which you wish to remove the contact.
    Thanks! 10 8
  • How can I add contacts to a group if I don't already have them in my contacts list?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • Create contacts for them and then afterward put the contacts in the group.
    Thanks! 14 29
  • Is there a way to add multiple lists of names to the contact list?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • With contact groups, you can easily organize your contacts making it easier to email a specific set of people. For example, if you created a contact group called "Soccer club," you could just send a message to that group, rather than sending out an email to 50 different people. Never leave somebody off an email again. To create a contact group: Click Gmail at the top-left corner of your Gmail page, then choose Contacts. Select contacts that you want to add to a group, click the Groups button, then create new. Enter the name of the group. Click OK.
    Thanks! 21 79
  • I want to make a contact group with email addresses that I do not want permanently in my Contacts. Can I make a list using the emails rather than my contacts (like I can in MSOutlook)?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • You can create a list of the emails in a spreadsheet with each email in a different cell of the spreadsheet. When you want to email them, just open the spreadsheet and copy the entire row of email addresses. Then, go to your Gmail and paste them into the "To" field. This will put all the email addresses into your outgoing email without creating them as contacts.
    Thanks! 1 1
  • How many email addresses can I send one email to at a time?
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • As many as you want.
    Thanks! 3 9
