How to Arrange Patio Furniture

A patio can be an additional room of your house; an outdoor room where you spend much of your free time. To make it feel like a comfortable space where you will want to spend time, you will need to arrange your patio furniture to suit your lifestyle.

Method One of Three:
Assess Your Empty Patio

  1. 1
Find a focal point for your patio. This can be your deck, a garden, or stone fireplace. This will be where you place your furniture.
  2. 2
Measure the area you will use for your furniture. This will ensure you get the right size furniture for the space you have.
  3. 3
Decide how you will use the area. Will it be for relaxing, eating, or entertaining? This will help determine the kind of furniture to put in the space.

Method Two of Three:
Organize Your Patio Furniture

  1. 1
Place your biggest piece of furniture, such as a lounge or loveseat, against the longest wall or empty space.
  2. 2
Put chairs around the big piece of furniture to make a conversation area.
  3. 3
Use end tables and coffee tables just like you would in a living room. This way your guests have a place to put their drinks.
  4. 4
Keep your kitchen area separate from your living area. The table and chairs can go in an area close to the grill if you have one. However, you will not want to place them too close for safety reasons.

  • Where do I arrange furniture on a 10x20 deck? Steps are at one end.
    Answered by wikiHow Contributor
    • Start your layout with some checked paper to draw it out. The furniture should be away from doors, windows and steps. A nice 2- to 4-foot plant would be helpful near steps or doors. Place seating area to face the viewing zone with no one person without a view. Consider getting a large box to place cushions and covers in that would also work as a table or seat. With a 10X20 deck you will have lots of room and a BBQ grill away from seating area, doors and steps would be a good idea too.

  • Keep scale in mind when buying furniture. If you have a small patio, you will not want to use big furniture or it will make the space seem smaller.
